Goal IV:
Theory and Praxis
Students have a critical grounding in theoretical perspectives that draw on research in LIS as well as other fields of knowledge, that inform their professional practices including research, organization, management, and access to information.
IV.a. Students will describe applications of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in library and information science.

IV.b. Students will identify opportunities for research and develop plans for research in applied settings in library and information science.
My first major collaborative project was in research methods in library and information science, LIS 6271. Working together in a small group we designed a research proposal for increasing social workers in public libraries. This focused on how social workers in public libraries could provide supportive resources for patrons in crisis and public library staff. Although I did not pick the topic, I was very passionate about researching this topic. I have had many interactions with patrons in crisis and wish I had the skills to approach them in a more compassionate way to get them the help they need. I, and my group, feel that having social workers not only present at times in the library, but actually training staff in practices like de-escalation and compassion would be beneficial to everyone involved. This was a fun project that taught us more about ways to deal with patrons in crisis, budgeting, research, creating surveys (that was my personal favorite), and most of all learning how to work as a group with the difficulty of never meeting in person.
